Superb Crisp 1766 Georgia “Savannah Court-House” Note
Province of Georgia. 1766. One Pound. “Savannah Court-House” Issue. One Signature. Unissued. Sealed split and corner repair. Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
Fr. GA-45. This rare French and Indian War period, large size format 5” x 4.25” 1766 Colonial Georgia note has a vivid red and black text. The fresh bold brown signature of George Elliott written at lower left. Original, superbly printed with major Press-Text embossing so sharp, it is obvious to the naked eye, within the crisp bright laid period paper. All marginal decorative designs and its text are perfectly centered within four large even margins. There is a deft sealed paper split and an invisible small .35” repair to the lower right corner. The sharply detailed black woodblock vignette at lower right displays the “Savannah Court-House” with its entrance way lined with lovely trees on both sides. Only 2,523 notes were authorized to be issued. This note has superb eye appeal and is certainly one of the finest known. The PMG Population Report records only one example graded as being Certified EF-45. An important, exceptional quality, Colonial Georgia paper money rarity.
