Unique 1789-Dated George Washington Inaugural Button Hand-Engraved Folk Art Style or Fantasy Piece c. 1812-15
1789-Dated, Hand-Engraved George Washington Inaugural Button. Pewter. Unlisted. Unique Design. Folk Art Style or Fantasy Piece. Likely made c. 1812-15. American Eagle with “G - W” in script at either side of its head. No shank. Very Fine.
28 mm. Coat and Jacket Size Button. An unique Washington button in that it is unlisted in Albert’s “Washington Historical Buttons.” This button has a very crude American Eagle with shield, “G - W” in script on the sides of the eagle’s head, and the date “1789” at lower edge. The shank is missing. This remarkable looking Button was thought to have been taken back as a War of 1812 trophy to England circa 1812-15 by a British soldier. The raised boss on the back is missing its shank from a button design made circa 1812. A truly amazing and interesting study piece that would be a good extension item for any George Washington Inaugural Button collection.
