MARRYAT, FREDERICK
English naval officer and novelist (1792-1848); one of the first and best authors of sea tales. Good content ALS, 3 pp., 8vo, Buffalo, 8/18, n.y. [ca. 1837]. He writes a Dr. Holland in New York, "...I have just returned from Lake Superior having been jammed up 5 days in a Buck Canoe & am not sorry to find myself on my legs again...This is a fair country of yours...The inhabitants are very decent sort of people & next to the English I like you pretty well, certainly better than the Irish ...I bought 4 lots of land about 1 mile square when I was at Detroit but it is all on the right side of the water, the Canada side...I met Augusta here & at Albany & am on very intimate terms with her - also Miss Cushman at Detroit, she is a very clever Girl..." After explaining his travel plans, he opines, "...I do not think that the Queen [Victoria, at the time newly ascended and unmarried] will marry a Jackson man but you can but try - She is to let certainly, but as far as you are concerned, to be let alone. At the same time, it may be possible that she may be obliged to yield to the Jacksons of the Times although this as yet from Holland has not met with her approbation..." On the question of American specie, he jokes, "...If your Mint was as good as your Mint Julep , it would be a great thing for America - I am a Mint Julep man & will have no other politics while I am in America..." With integral address leaf. Toning and discoloration throughout, partial separation at all folds, seal hole in third page. Otherwise good. Offered at signature value despite its choice content. In November 1837, Lower Canada rebelled against English rule and Marryat joined the naval forces suppressing the revolt.
