Chittenden was a Vermont author, banker, lawyer, politician and peace advocate who served as Register of the Treasury during the Lincoln administration. 8” x 10” autograph letter signed, New York, January 27, 1894, to New York Senator David B. Hill. “Strictly Confidential…Secretary Chase sent to President Lincoln the nomination of Maunsel B. Field as Asst. Tr…the President declined to make the nomination. Secretary Chase insisted upon it…and declared that if Mr Field was not nominated he would resign. The President declined to nominate Mr Field and Secretary Chase resigned…It was fortunate for the country that Mr. Lincoln was too great a man to nourish a personal resentments. He subsequently made Mr Chase Chief Justice and afterwards a warm attachment existed between these two great men….”
