Description
English, 19th century. Tiger oak slant front table top letter box with hinged doors that open to compartmentalized interior with sloped divider niches for housing letters and papers, above concave well for writing instruments flanked by bronze lidded glass inkwells on sides. Lids of inkwells with crown at center. Interior of hinged doors with shaped storage and remnants of string X supports. Long shallow pull out drawer at bottom. Approximate height 14.125", width 16.75", depth 8.25".
Condition
Nice, warm patina. No key present. Surface scratches & dings, commensurate with age & usage. Separation on doors due to shrinkage, therefore, does not close fully (see image 1). Missing small nail to top right corner. Possible repair to right door on interior--small screw head is present. Secret release is missing & a hole is still present (see image 3). String supports on interior of doors are not original. Secret compartment under pen rest with replacement piece of wood. Slight wear to beveled edges on inkwells (see images 7 & 8).
