Description
French, early 19th century. "Le Promerops Promerar Femelle, No. 9", hand-colored ornithological engraving from "Histoire Naturelle des Promérops et des Guépiers", published 1806-07 in Paris, written by François Levaillant (1753-1824) with engravings by Guyard and others after Auguste Pelletier (French, active c.1816-1846). Engraving depicts a bright orange feathered bird with back and tail of black and white having a black striped hood and long beak, the bird resting on a tree branch. Inscribed lower center "Le Promerops Promerar femelle. No. 9.", lower left "Auguste pinx.", below title "De l'Imprimerie de Millevoy", and lower right "Guyard fils sculp". Framed approximately 28" x 20.25", sheet size approximately 21.125" x 14.125".
Condition
Examined out of frame. Foxing and page discoloration throughout with some mat burn. Five pieces of hinging tape to top on verso, adhesive residue to each edge on verso. Left side has been cut down (likely to separate page from binding), with some losses and minimal tears to each alternate edge. 2 wrinkles or handling creases to right of lower edge of branch.
