Description
A group of purses, reticules, wallets and notebooks, mainly 1820s-1860s, approx 47, including seven with gilt or silvered metal frames, four with steel frames, a wallet of 1760s brocade; five of knitted and crochet silk with metal bar and ring fasteners, two 1850s floral beadworked reticules, others with cut steel beads, two of tapestry weave c.1860 and others (qty) Provenance: the late Harry Matthews
Condition
• 1760s mauve brocade wallet – there is a strange little patch of fabric (which matches) to right side of closure flap. Colours on the back and slightly brighter than on the front. Threads on front closure flap and base of front panel are rubbed. Pink silk lining is good • C.1800-20 Morocco and gilt tooled wallet – corrosion to steel clasp, leather exterior is darkened with use, pencil holder has a split, interior flaps have breaks in them. Fair condition • 1780 ivory satin with tambour work and sequins – silk is very frayed generally, inside there is a mirror and manicure compartments, poor condition • 1840 purple silk card case – very soiled • C.1800 pink satin with gold sequins – contains sewing needles and a small pencil portrait, very worn silk interior and exterior • Cotton wallet with ink drawing of a girl and boy c.1880 – filled with knitting and crochet notes, soiled exterior • 5 little purses with bar closures – one missing a metal finial • 5 purses with steel beads – all with corrosion, metal mesh reticule good condition • Beadworked wrist bands – one with 1x2cm hole • 4 x beadworked purses with metal frames – one with corrosion, pouches generally good • Venice souvenir reticule – faint stain one side • Large beaded reticule – numerous splits • 2 other beaded reticules – damaged upper edge, others good but lacking lining • 4 purses with mesh and crochet pouches and framed mounts – one with corrosion • 18th century silver and peach knitted reticule – good condition • Late 18th century pulled and drawnthread coloured reticule – ribbon upper edge is worn • Mesh reticule – corrosion to steel beads • Hair necklace • 4 x 1920s-30s purses – coloured mesh has small hole, gold and silver mesh has 2cm ladders at upper edge, others good conbdition • Knitted, woven, embroidered purses/pouches (9) – generally good condition. • 2 x tapestry purses – one in good condition • Embroidered moire purse c.1840-50 – badly stained • American beadwork container – mis-shapen and lid edge is frayed • Silvered metal and enamel card case – lacking closure flaps and engraved trim
