Description
A Roman provincial bronze brooch - ex Hattatt Collection, c. 2nd Century AD. The brooch is in the form of a donkey or mule with incised detail. An attractive example found at Trier (Augusta Treverorum), Germany. Hattatt’s notes on backside of the base reads 'Ground line typical on continental animal brooches, but none traced of a Donkey. Horses usually prance with head high. Surely made by Celtic hands showing their skill at economically capturing the distinctive character of animals, here with legs all forward as if backing a stubborn attitude'. L: 1 1/3 in (3.4cm). Mounted on Hattatt’s characteristic custom base with his references and notations. Ex Sotheby’s London from the Hattat collection.
