The present work in oval format by Albert Graefle depicts the portrait of a reverent young Madonna, her head turned to the side, with a white veil covering her dark hair and blue and red robe. A fine portrait for private devotion. Graefle is regarded as a skillful portraitist who portrayed many royals including Queen Victoria. The painting is offered in an elegant gold stucco frame.
The painting is in good condition with craquelure and partially tiny color losses. There are a few minimal retouchings, for instance along the edges and to the figure’s left eye. On the verso the canvas is inscribed ‘A. Graefle pt’, presumably by the artist. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 56 x 48.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 39.5 x 32 cm. (tfa)
