Detailed and fluidly drawn study in the manner of Jan Brueghel II (1601-1678), who, like his father Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), was known for the many-figured village landscapes and battle scenes

Offered here is a pen and ink drawing from the hand of an unknown artist that originated in the 19th century. Depicted is a busy village landscape. With fluidly drawn strokes the artist presents a detailed, many-figured scene in the style of the Flemish painter Jan Brueghel II, who in turn created numerous paintings in the style of his father Jan Brueghel I.

The pen and ink drawing is inscribed by unknown hand ‘Jan Brueghel’ on verso. It is overall in good condition. The sheet is matted and lightly browned, the corners slightly stained. On verso residues of former mounting in the corners. Otherwise of very good impression. The sheet-sized image measures 19.4 x 31.6 cm.

Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678)

Jan Brueghel II comes from a famous family of painters. He is the son of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625). His sons Jan, Jan Peeter, Ambrose Philips, Ferdinand, Abraham and Jan Baptist were also painters. Jan Brueghel II learned from 1611 in the studio of his father. This was followed by journeys to Italy, where he met among others Anthony van Dyck. After his father's death Jan Brueghel II took over the workshop and produced numerous commissioned works in the style of his father, amongst others for the French Court. In the 1640s, he began to distance himself from the painting style of his father starting to use certain image parts as modules, which were able to be used interchangeably in other compositions as well.
