This painting shows an allegory of summer as a young woman with weavy blond hair. Her head is crowned with flowers and she is presenting large bouquets of daisies, cornflowers and poppies in her arms. In her left hand she holds a single ear of corn. With the white robe falling from her shoulders, she exudes an air of sensual devotion.

The varnished canvas shows some patches on the reverse . Under UV light several restored areas are visible, especially on the hands. Along the lower edge some color flaking is visible. The wooden frame has only minimal signs of age and wear. The overall framed dimensions are 90.5 x 98 cm. The stretcher measures 86.5 x 93.5 cm.

Gustav Graef (1821-1895)

Born in Königsberg in 1821, the artist Gustav Graef specialized in portraits and German history painting. He was educated at the Royal Academy in Dusseldorf under Wilhelm von Schadow. Paintings by Gustav Graef can be found in international museum collections such as the Old National Gallery in Berlin and at the National Portrait Gallery in London. (amb)
