Expressive, atmospheric oil sketch by the Austrian painter Wilhelm List, which shows the portrait of a girl; the auction record for a large-format painting by the artist is currently set at more than €600,000

In this study of a girls head with loose brush strokes the Austrian artist has clearly concentrated on the sublime depiction of the rosy skin and the caption of facial expression. Hair, shoulders and the surrounding ground retreat due to cursoriness in the depiction that reaches up to abstraction behind the expressive face.

The work is signed lower left ‘W. List’. It bears minor surface soil and slight framing traces. The overall condition is good. The frame is in good condition with only minor signs of wear. The sketch measures 31.3 x 26.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 54 x 49 cm.

Wilhelm List (1864-1918)

The Vienna-born artist Wilhelm List studied from 1885 to 1889 under Christian Griepenkerl at the Academy in Vienna and then in Munich with Ludwig Löfftz and Paul Höcker and at the Paris Academy. From 1893 List exhibited at the Künstlerhaus Wien and founded together with Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, among others, 1897, the Vienna Secession. Lists works are clearly influenced by Art Nouveau and have a similarity to Gustav Klimt. Portraits, landscapes and genre paintings are his favorite subjects.
