Atmospheric landscape with houses inspired by the Impressionist tradition

The present painting by Friedrich Pontini depicts an atmospheric winter landscape. The viewer looks over a snowy hill to a snow-covered valley with a couple of colorful houses. Behind it extends a forest and a lake lies in the distance. Soft shades of blue and brown gray, amidst the white of the snow surfaces, are effectively complemented by color accents in ocher and brick-red. Pontini was able to capture the wintery atmosphere of a small rural village set in a serene scenery.

The painting is in very good condition. The canvas has been relined. The work is unframed. It is signed ‘F. PONTINI’ lower left. There are remains of an exhibition label with the date of 1905 on the verso. The stretcher frame measures 50 x 44 cm.

In 1908 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus. Pontini found the themes for his landscapes in the Czech Republic, on the Baltic Sea and in northern Italy. He worked as a painter as well as graphic artist. In addition to impressionist landscapes he created vedutas and paintings of birds.
