The present painting is an impressive example of the extensive oeuvre by Alfred Jensen. It seems to depict a port view of Lübeck with the Marienkirche in the distance. The scenery reveals a number of crowded sailing boats and ships and also indicates the daily hustle in the old town on the left side of the composition.

The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘Alfred Jensen Prof 1918.‘. There are tiny abrasions visible within the water. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching in the sky. The varnish is a bit browned in the areas of the sky. Despite of these aspects, the painting shows a good overall condition. The simple wooden frame is also well preserved and measures 82.5 x 133 cm. The size of the stretcher is 80 x 130 cm.



Alfred Jensen (1859-1935)

Born in Randers, Denmark, in 1859, the painter Alfred Jensen studied painting at the academies of Hamburg and Kassel, between 1884 and 1897. Besides, he was parallel active as a sailor. Jensen already specialized in marine painting during his studies and was later appointed professor at the Hamburger Kunstgewerbeschule. His works can be found in the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte, at the Altonaer Museum, the Kieler Museum and in several private collections. His paintings are still successfully traded at the international art market. (cbo)
