A popular Soviet satirical artist, Lev Samoilov started producing posters during the war, while serving as a sailor with the Baltic Fleet. Eventually he was transferred to work as an artist for the Baltic Fleet newspaper. His posters and caricatures regularly appeared in Leningrad through the war. Afterwards, he worked for political literature publishers in the Baltics, before eventually moving to Moscow and becoming a staff member of the most important Soviet satirical periodical, Krokodil magazine.
