Origin: Native American, American Indian TRIBE: Cochiti Pueblo New Mexico. SIZE: 5 inches tall X 4 inches wide This is an excellent pottery figure of a pueblo deer dancer, as the dancer would appear in the plaza, leaning over and walking with the use of canes as the fore legs of the deer.
Animal dances at the pueblos are a plea for rain and for bountiful crops as well as an abundance of animals for food. Generally, buffalo, deer, antelope, and rams are portrayed together at a dance in the plaza. It is one of the most often seen dances in the fall and winter.
