"...There are some 15 of 20 young men from 20 to 35 years of age who are intending to leave here in the spring for California...They are all well acclimated to the bilious malaria of this country having resided here some years. They intend going by land by way of Fort Leavenworth and on through by Capt. Fremont's route. They intend leaving by the first of April. ...I perceive by the papers that the Boston L.I.Company do not insure those going to California, as they think the risk too great..."
