With thick impasto, this still life by Lester F. Johnson details the artist’s expressionist style. Portraying a potted plant on a table set before a textured background, the work is rich with the tactile movement of the brushstrokes. In a subdued palette of browns, blacks and creams, the green of the leaves pops at the top of the composition.
Painted in 1965, this oil on canvas is signed, titled and dated verso. The work measures 42 x 44 inches. Surface dirt, otherwise appears in good condition. Not examined under UV.
Lester F. Johnson (American, 1919-2010)
A member of the second generation of the New York School, figurative painter Lester F. Johnson explored the human figure through an expressionistic style. After studying at the Minneapolis School of Art, Johnson moved to New York City, sharing a studio with Larry Rivers. In New York, Johnson’s works were included in exhibitions at the Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His works can be found in the collections of numerous institutions throughout the United States.
