With a frenzy of color, this abstract lithograph by Sam Francis demonstrates the artist’s interest in expressionism and color field painting. A bold explosion of red, yellow and green overtakes the image, giving the impression of expansion over the blank areas of paper. Smaller splashes of color serve as satellite forms, enhancing the relationship between positive and negative space.

Executed in 1987, this color lithograph on wove paper is signed and numbered twenty-seven from an edition of fifty. Printed by George Page and published by The Litho Shop Inc., Santa Monica, the full sheet is printed with deckled edges. The sheet measures 45 x 27 ¾ inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs.

Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994)

California-born Abstract Expressionist painter Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of color and light. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, but he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. In addition to New York Abstract Expressionism, his work holds references to Color Field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French Impressionism, and his own California roots. Throughout a long and prolific career, Francis created thousands of paintings as well as works on paper, prints, and monotypes.
