Description
A large carved wood mask from Papua New Guinea, Boroi #2 Village, located near the mouth of the Ramu River. Carved from a solid piece of wood and oval-shaped with inset eyes and characteristic hooked nose, shell decoration as well as raffia 'hair' and 'beard' still present as well and traces or orange pigment and much black. An impressive piece! L. ca 36 in./ca.90 cm. The masks collected in this village were found in the ruins of an old "Haus Tambaran"(cult house for males only) that had collapsed and was not re-built, 1950's, and includes a copy of a 3-page letter from Dr. Prof Barron describing the journey to Boroi #2 and his student's collection of these masks.
