Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico or Guatemala, Mayan, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. This jade pendant features a carved frontal visage of a Mayan ruler or lord surrounded by two half faces, all with finely delineated features. The Maya had a preference for brilliant and bright apple-green jade. Perforations drilled laterally for suspension or attachment to clothing. Size: 1"H (2.5 cm) x 2-3/8"W (6 cm) x 5/8"L (1.5 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
