Description
DANIEL F. WENTWORTH (AMERICAN, 1850 - 1934) LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on canvas, a large-scale depiction of a secluded valley lake, surrounded by mountains covered in autumnal foliage. Signed "(?) Wentworth" lower left. On original stretcher with label for merchant "Chas. Edmunds / Boston" verso and housed in an old molded-composition frame with gold-painted surface. Circa 1880. 27 1/2" x 47 1/2" sight, 33 1/4" x 53 1/2" OA.
Provenance: From an Augusta Co., VA estate collection.
Catalogue Note: Associated with the second generation of Hudson River Valley School painters, Daniel F. Wentworth (1850 - 1934) was born in Norway, Maine but lived and worked in Connecticut for most of his adult life. He exhibited in his lifetime at the Brooklyn Art Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Boston Art Club, and the California Academy of Fine Arts. He also exhibited as a part of the Connecticut Commission at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, 1904 - 1906, presenting a painting titled "In the Wethersfield Meadows". Working well into the 20th century, Wentworth continued to focus on the core subjects of landscapes and animals. The present lot appears to be an early work by the artist and demonstrates his ability to capture the play of light in a vast wilderness panorama.
