(HONG KONG) FIRST AMERICAN RESIDENT OF HONG KONG
CHARLES V. GILLESPIE American merchant and first American resident of Hong Kong. It is also thought he may have spread the news of the discovery of gold in California to China. Three signed volumes of "The Canton Miscellany", bound selections of Chinese tales, history, etc., much centered on Canton, published in Canton, 1831, with badly damaged covers and torn end pages, one with end page signed by George Ernest Morrison with two other such signed pages loose (one damaged). Each volume has been inscribed by Gillespie to his sister in Canton on April 18, 1832 on the title page. Overall good to very good.
