Item Details
Description
Greece, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. Mold-made pottery bowl in rich red and brown hues. Wonderfully intricate impressed designs comprised of palmettes alternating with representations of figures emerging from amphorae with an eight-petaled rosette in the center. This relief decoration was created to mimic bowls of a similar form made from gold or silver. This type of ceramic was a precursor to Terra Sigillata. Size: 4-1/2"H (11.43 cm) x 3"H (7.62 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private William Dale collection. Mr. Dale was a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's and acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures.
