Description
This is an original early albumen photographic print from about 1870, showing a painting of Fra Girolamo by Savonorola. This type of photo was produced by museums for travelers to bring home as a souvenir. They were the first detailed photographic reproductions of art, and were often used by museums, libraries and schools for art reference up to the 1970's, when color reproductions became widespread and economical. Albumen prints are prized for their details. They were made from glass negatives which are the same size as the print, and were mounted on heavy card stock. The publisher's embossed logo is on the mount, and there is a hand-written inscription on the back, identifying the image. This view into the past is collectible, and when framed it will be a sophisticated addition to your home or office. Silver photographic prints from the albumen paper era (1855-1895) generally show some form of deterioration, or possess spots and blemishes of chemical origin that distinguish them as actual photographic prints. Most albumen prints are faded and yellowed to some degree, either overall or in localized areas. The print size is approx. 7.5" x 9.5", the mount is 18.5" x 13.5" Both are in good condition, with normal signs of wear. The card stock has cut, rounded corners.
