Swimming great Norman Ross seated on a diving platform with crowds surrounding the pool after another record-breaking day. Norman DeMille Ross (1895 -1953) won five events at the Inter-Allied Games in June 1919, held at Joinville-Le-Pont near Paris, and three gold medals at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. He set thirteen world records and won eighteen U.S. national championships during his career. Of the feats commemorated by the present photograph, The Stanford Daily, 20 October 1919, recorded that "Ten world records were broken by Norman Ross, including every mark between 550 and 1000 yards., Friday afternoon in the Encina pool. "
