Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 600-900 CE. This intriguing bichrome pottery vessel greets us with the face of a deity protruding from the front panel of its surface. Likely the Mayan wind god, this spiritual visage is delineated with large, almond shaped eyes, a distinctive browline, air-filled chubby cheeks, pursed lips, and a geometric fringed coiffure. The remainder of the exterior is incised with a low-relief decorative program; upper and lower registers are comprised of abstract, geometric designs framed by solid red bands. Size: 11-1/2"H x 7" at widest point.
