Description
It's a smaller and slightly less ornate version of the style that awaits the victor in the winner's circle, though it should go without saying that neither style commonly appears on the hobby's auction block. Three figural horses adorn the base of the handsome relic, with a fourth atop the lid, which is engraved with the particulars:
"New York Racing Association, The Belmont, Belmont Park, June 5, 1999, Won by Jeanne G. Vance's Lemon Drop Kid, Trainer Flint S. Schulhofer."
A non-slip insert on the base hides the maker's mark, but the affluent world of top-level thoroughbred racing spares no expense in the creation of their sterling silver spoils of war. The trophy measures over ten inches (10") in height, inclusive of the lid, and approximately eight inches (8") in diameter. Light tarnishing is evident throughout, but could easily be remedied--otherwise the rare trophy exhibits no condition flaws worthy of note. It's one of the most important and exciting offerings that Heritage has presented from the Sport of Kings. A letter of provenance from the widow of Schulhofer is included. Letter of provenance from Stephanie Schulhofer.
