Description
Turkey, Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 900 CE. Of relatively simple form, early bronze oil lamp with small filler lid and looping handle, tall cross rising above handle. Small hole in base where it could be mounted on a pole-type stand. Size: 3-3/4"L.
Provenance: Ex-private collection of William Dale, a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's, who acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern treasures during his tenure.
