Description
European, Italy, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A cast bronze miniature open book that has the following Latin inscription "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS" which translates to "May peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist." This quote is infamously inscribed upon the tablets held by the statue of the Lion of Venice (ca. 1268 CE), an ancient bronze winged lion sculpture in the Piazza di San Marco (St. Mark's Square) of Venice, Italy, which came to symbolize the city as well as St. Mark after its arrival there in the 12th century. Includes custom stand. Size: book itself measures 1-1/2"H x 1-1/4"W.
Provenance: Ex-private Palm Beach, Florida collection, acquired between 1980 and 1990.
