Description
English, early 20th century (c. 1910). An Edwardian mahogany, tulipwood veneer and inlaid display cabinet, the lock plate stamped "Salmon Bros. London", the removable tulipwood veneered pediment decorated with floral marquetry with central foliate cartouche, the edges decorated with applied acanthus-carved scrolls, the case comprising a serpentine door facade with applied scroll and acanthus carved molding at corners, the two glass doors opening to case interior comprising of a large lower shelf and smaller coved upper shelf all lined in original grey velvet fabric, the concave case sides flanking the door facade decorated with marquetry female figures in classical dress within central cartouche, with classical foliate and floral pattern motifs, overall surmounting an openwork apron decorated with floral and acanthus motifs, all raised on legs in the Art Nouveau style on scroll feet. Approximate height (with pediment) 68.75", (without pediment) 52.5", width 48" (at widest point), depth 16". Note: A similar inlaid cabinet by Salmon Bros. sold for $6,300 at Christie's Interiors, London, South Kensington, Sale #9779, on January 30, 2013.
Condition
Light surface scratches at case top (likely from dragging objects across surface)--not typically noticeable when in front of cabinet. Slight small surface fracture near top of right stile (not visible from front). Slight surface abrasions to left stile (not visible from front). Interior retains original velvet lining with wear commensurate with age and use, comprising circular impressions in velvet likely from vases and other objects displayed within. Slight stains to velvet at base of interior. Apron exhibits losses to wood of carved flowers and losses to scrolls at right side of apron. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
