Description
Alexander Rosell (British, 1859-1922), "A New Toy"-1908, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left. Figural genre painting depicting family in workshop presenting young boy with a toy ship, older man sitting on wooden stool showing little boy model ship, woman standing beside man, young boy standing in front with arms outstretched and delighted facial expression, work bench behind figures covered in tools, clock with saw propped against wall and light peering through crack in window. Title inscribed on verso of canvas in pencil "Roselli A New Toy". Framed approximately 29" x 32.5". Unframed approximately 20.5" x 24.5".
Provenance: Gifted by Dr. A.J. Ochsner to Erwin Schmidt in 1920, then by descent to the owner who sold the painting at Skinner Auctioneers and Appraisers in Massachusetts in September 24, 2010 as Lot 318 whereby acquired by Private Collection in Atlanta, Georgia.
Condition
Examined under blacklight. Overall in near original condition. Oxidation to verso of canvas and stretcher commensurate with age. Craquelure to paint surface commensurate with age. Evidence of older varnish layer. Two small areas of in painting to upper left of background, no further in painting in background. Very small and light in painting to man and woman figures with one area below man's face and other scattered areas to their faces. Evidence of frame rubbing with small areas of paint loss along edges. No other apparent abrasions, tears, rips, or punctures. Paint layer stable. Painting not relined.
