Description
RARE NAPOLEONIC WARS CASED PRISONER-OF-WAR SHIP MODEL - Bone and Baleen Miniature Model of a British Man-o-War, circa 1805, (a Fourth-Rate Ship of the Line Frigate, 50 guns on two decks, crew of 320-400), housed in a straw marquetry decorated case, behind glass, with angled mirror backing so that all sides are visible. Incredibly detailed, the hull is planked, with balleen straking, polychrome figurehead of a Roman soldier, stern gallery with finely carved balustered gallery and square windows, the spars are bone, the stunsails balleen, with accurate rigging, no sails. The model is mounted on its original marquetry, footed base with a low balustrade, the interior of the cabinet is fully covered in straw marquetry, with watercolors of Neptune and Brittania under glass on the inside of the doors. The exterior is fully decorated, with finials and the original feet. 17" x 20" x 9 1/2" overall. Very good condition, with minor losses to the marquetry. Typically these models were made by men who had served on the depicted ship.
