Item Details
Description
Kakemono, ink on paper. Japan, 19th cent.
On of the branches runs vertically almost through the whole picture height and points in a striking way a definite direction of content - - the heliotrope, also with its spiritual and symbolic connotation. The painting of the interlaced, yet more or less straight branches is masterfully confident, the strokes never waver and are convincing. It is amazing how much spirit is incorporated in barrenness. At the bottom is gnarled rootage or a rock in which roots, some with thorns, are entwined. The lightly washed pen drawing conveys misty dreary weather. Right above is a text in seal script, next to the signature Chikusen (second character shows the meaning “Zen“). Two red seals below, the lowest also Chikusen. In right bottom corner, another red seal. The former kakemono painting is mounted and framed Japanese.
SIZE 136,5 x 52,5 cm, picture 118 x 38,5 cm
