Item Details
Description
30. Red and Black Coral Cane-London 1922-Singular organic material cane with a red coral handle left in its natural shape and a shaft fashioned of six perfectly matched and straight Black Coral segments. Plain silver collar personalized with the engraved initials “G.R.H” and struck with London hallmarks 1922. Among the rarest of rare and probably most favored of all material canes, this specimen cane ticks all the boxes for walking sticks connoisseurs with a taste for the unique. It survived in superb condition with the entire gentle radiance of coral and still retains its ivory ferrule. Red as well as black coral grows slowly in deep waters, and many species have long life spans. One specimen was reported by scientists to be more than 4,200 years old with a growth rate of only five micrometers per year.-4 ½” x 2 ¼”, O.L. 35 ¼”-$3,500-$4,500
Condition
The ivory Loxodonta Africana in this cane complies with pre-cites and the Endangered Species Act 1973 which are currently the law in the United States. It is our opinion that this cane was made before 1973 and the ivory has not been repaired or altered. Each lot in this auction is in our opinion legal to sell in the USA except in states that have restrictions. Please check your state law.Species Authority:(Blumenbach, 1797)Common Name(s):English–African ElephantFrench–Éléphant d'Afrique, Éléphant AfricainSpanish–Elefante AfricanoKingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyANIMALIACHORDATAMAMMALIAPROBOSCIDEAELEPHANTIDAENo new law is in effect for ivory that complies with the ESA.
