45. Container Cane-Ca. 1870-Plain white metal knob on its hollow metal shaft accurately lined with hand sawn black leather and heeled with a brass ferrule. The knob unlocks with a simple quarter turn to reveal a large container which extends over the entire shaft’s length, most likely intended as a map case. Similar canes are recorded to have marine ties and been used by captains during the glorious seafaring days when cartography was indispensable for the commercial as well as the military traffic.
