Description
128. Hippo Tooth Day Cane-Ca. 1900 Large tooth handle fashioned of the tip of a Hippo tooth and personalized with the flowery engraved initials of its first owner, iron wood shaft with a plain silver collar and white metal ferrule. So-far, so-good, however, what makes this cane very special is the engraving on the silver collar with German hallmarks “Nilpferdbeute des Herrn Zhalmeisters Köner/November 99./Sie am Nordostabhange von Meru!” which loosely translates “Hippo prey of Mr. Zhalmeisters Köner, November 99, North East slope of Meru”. The cane was obviously also used as a redoubtable Knobkerrie, disguised life preserver weapon. Superb patina and coloring to the handle with some chipping.-H. 5 ¼” x 1 ¼”, O.L. 35 ¼”-$700-$1,000
