Jazz Singer “En Souvenir de Josephine Baker” Photograph
JOSEPHINE BAKER (1906-1975), Jazz Singer, Actress and Dancer.
1930-Dated, Vintage Postcard Photograph Signed, “Josephine Baker,” a gelatin silver matte, 3.5” x 5.5”, featuring Josephine Baker wearing a jeweled headdress and large earrings, Choice Very Fine. Inscribed in black ink on the image, "a Pierre Orlanda, en Souvenir de , Paris, 1930." This Photograph is tipped to a much larger matte, measuring to 9” x 11.5” put together with 16 Photograph Cigarette Cards featuring the flamboyant entertainer in a variety of costumes she made famous at the Casino de Paris. A few of the cigarette cards exhibit some creasing while the Signed Photograph in Very Fine condition. A nice display piece!
From Wikipedia: Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou (1934) or to become a world-famous entertainer. Baker, who refused to perform for segregated audiences in America, is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. She was once offered unofficial leadership in the movement in the United States by Coretta Scott King in 1968, following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. Baker, however, turned down the offer.

She was also known for assisting the French Resistance during World War II, and received the French military honor, the Croix de guerre and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.
