This work is a preliminary study for Lozowick's 1940 lithograph by the same title, which he produced for the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. "A house that Lozowick had passed one morning on his way from Croton-on-Hudson to New York City was no longer standing when he returned that afternoon. In the intervening hours, it had been destroyed by fire" (J. Flint, The Prints of Louis Lozowick: A Catalogue Raisonné, New York, 1982, p. 139, no. 169).
Alternate Artist Spellings: "Louis Lozowick", "Lozowick, Louis"
