Description
WE SHIP! The AEAA is proud to present this gorgeous enameled set of early 1950s Art Deco sterling silver demitasse spoons, finished in a special shimmering herringbone pattern. These wonderful spoons come from the famed Jacob Tostrup of Norway, founded in 1832. All of the spoons carry a proper hallmark, are finished with a base crown, and are in their original box. The total weight is 58.5 grams (spoons), and the set weighs 8 oz., sits 3.875 inches long (spoons), and 5.5 x 5.5 x 1 inch overall, and all are in excellent condition. This fine heirloom is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford, respected, longtime dealers of valuable antiques. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Jacob Ulrich Holfeldt Tostrup (1 July 1806 – 31 January 1890) was a Norwegian goldsmith. Born as number four of eight siblings in a family which could only afford to send the oldest to university, Jacob began as a goldsmith apprentice in Bergen between 1823 and 1828. He then had short stays in St. Petersburg and Copenhagen. He received his journeyman's certificate in 1828, moving to Christiania, and acquiring burgher-ship in 1832. That same year he founded the jewelers firm J. Tostrup, gradually expanding his business with more production equipment and better localities. Tostrup held several positions in the goldsmith's guild and artisan associations. His firm made the original enameled insignia for the Order of St. Olav, when the order was established in 1848 and later in 1883, he was put in charge of the entire production. J. Tostrup received the title royal court jeweler, and Jacob Tostrup received the Norwegian King's Medal of Merit in gold and was appointed a Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his work as a goldsmith. His son and grandson carried on the family business, which still exists to this day. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. *** COLLECTORS NOTE: Norwegian silver the maker's mark often consists of a symbol, but it could also be a printed name, an abbreviation or the initials of the maker. Many companies have more than one hallmark registered, this can sometimes be confusing. If the hallmark consists of letters it can also easily be confused with Danish hallmarks, because they have the same system with content mark and makers mark. In these cases, one will need a guide to be able to find out if the hallmark represents a Danish or a Norwegian maker. Makers' marks used on Norwegian silver are registered with the authorities. There are more than 1,600 marks registered. The names listed here are examples from a few of the most important makers of Norwegian mid-century enamel jewelry. Oystein Balle, Einar Modahl, David-Andersen A/S, Arne Nordlie, O. F. Hjortdahl, K. A. Rasmussen, Aksel Holmsen A/S, Albert Scharning, Ivar. T. Holt A/S, Jacob Tostrup A/S, and Finn Jensen.
