Item Details
Description
WE SHIP! the AEAA is very proud to present this stunning pair of ca. 1990s, large fine Bohemian (Czech Republic) crystal vases finished in the classic Ruby cut to crystal etching by Friedrich Egermann (see history below). Both the baluster & ovoid vases are copiously decorated with a black Forest scenic, including a manor house, woodland stag & birds, and gorgeous Rococo medallions, completed with well cut thumbprints & ovals. Each is properly marked with the vintage 1990 Czech Republic stickers, and are in excellent condition. The tallest measures 5.5 x 5.5 x 12.25 inches tall, with a total weight of 4# 10 oz. These heirlooms are from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford, noted dealers and lifelong collectors of valuable antiques. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.By 1820, Bohemian colored glass was becoming more and more popular. Glass makers in the Czech lands began to experiment with new types of colored glass materials and refining technologies. Northern Bohemia contributed to these new developments, especially through its outstanding glass technologist, Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864). Egermann, originally trained as a glass painter, opened his own studios in Polevsko, and later in Nový Bor, where he invented and developed a number of methods which were a substantial contribution to an upsurge of local glass making tradition and to growing exports. His first inventions in the field of decorated glass were: matted, so-called agate, glass combined with fine painting; and biscuit and mother-of-pearl enamels, both developed in 1824. Egermann's studio cooperated with the best glass decorators of that time, and served as a model that stimulated the rise in the quality of glass blown in the Nový Bor region. In 1818, Egermann introduced yellow staining: i.e. coloring of the glass surface with ions of silver. In the 1820s, Egermann developed so-called Lithyalin, the use of red and yellow staining which could be brushed onto the surface of the glass to imitate precious stones. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Egermann was fortunate to be the only maker of red staining in central Europe prior to 1840, as in 1832 he discovered his biggest & most historic invention: the red glaze. This was Friedrich Egermann’s own secret recipe, with the addition of copper to the smelt, in lieu of other minerals! Red was always a popular color for glass and until then the glass makers only knew how to make a nice ruby red with the help of the expensive ingredient gold. Egermann found a way to make a nice ruby red glaze with the help of just copper ions. This invention made him rich. Unfortunately, in ca. 1839, during a break-in, the recipe was stolen and sold to the Crystalleries de Saint-Louis and subsequently marketed all across Europe, and in the United States. This is the same formula that is so popular today, and examples can be found in museums, including the fabled Glass Museum Passau.
