first edition , title with woodcut vignette depicting 2 jugs and a cup with Roemer Visscher's personal motto above them 'Elck wat wills' ('something for everyone'), 183 engraved emblems by Claes Jansz Visscher, each with a Dutch, Latin or French motto, explanatory text in Dutch, some staining and spotting, contemporary calf, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip in compartments, [Landwehr, Low Countries, 869; Praz p.530], small oblong 4to, Amsterdam, Willem Iansz, 1614. Rare at auction. Initially Visscher had wanted to publish just the picturae , but upon the request of his friends and, more importantly, the publisher Iansz he added short explanatory texts.
