Brass WFD No3 Thompson Lantern Blue/Clear Globe

Description

This lantern frame is a classic Thompson patent design. It takes a 6" globe. The bail is a double wire affair with a brass screw that goes into a furrule in the top. These frames pre-date the use of springs in globe tops. There is a "WFD" engraving one one side of the lid and the other side of the lid has a "No3" engraving. One "tell" on where an early lantern was used is the use of glass founts in New England. This lantern has a brass fount. The lantern frame is pretty standard. It does not have the Thompson patent information stamped anywhere but as I stated in an RCAI article in 1995, "they just didn't stamp them all", still holds to be true.
The globe is a very nice blue over clear. The blue is very thick with a noticeable extra weight when felt for thickness. The clear is nice and has a nice shaped bottom to make sure it fits a 3 1/2" base diameter frame. There is one small flake off of the top. The frame has an old piece of foam in the top to keep the globe from rattling/shifting. Even with that foam it floats a bit. I test fit this globe in a Dietz #6 and it fit like a glove.
A very nice display piece. The WFD could be so many different locations. You could separate the globe from the frame and double your pleasure.
