Description
Andrew Johnson document signed "Andrew Johnson" as President. Two pages, front and verso, partially printed with an affixed paper embossed seal of the United States, Washington, D.C., September 14, 1865. Sight: 14.5"H x 10"W; Frame: 22.75"H x 17.5"W. The document is a pardon issued to Reverend E. H. Downing of Madison County, Mississippi. NOTE: The document is countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. Seward's signature is very shaky, as he was seriously injured only five months earlier by George Atzerodt during an assassination attempt as part of the John Wilkes Booth conspiracy.
