Description
Beatles - Klaus Voormann Original Drawing and Astrid Kirchherr Signed Beatles Photograph, Both in Matted Displays.  Two great items from artists closely associated with the group from their earliest days in Hamburg. (1) Klaus Voormann: A 7.75" x 10.25" (sight size- two small pieces excised) ink sketch of a photographer and two assistants working in a studio, unsigned. Matted to an overall 11.75" x 15.75". Very Fine. (2) Astrid Kirchherr: A 5.25" x 7" B&W photo of George Harrison, John Lennon, and Stuart Sutcliffe, originally taken in November 1960, laid down to a 7" x 9" (sight size) backing sheet signed boldly in silver ink at the lower margin. Matted to an overall 9.5" x 11.75". Photo Excellent, some creases in the background page. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection.

The Beatles (with Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe) were playing the Kaiserkeller Club in Hamburg, Germany, during the fall of 1960, alternating sets with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes (with Ringo Starr). One fateful night, a young artist and student by the name of Klaus Voormann wandered into the club and was entranced by the Beatles and their music. The next night he invited his two closest friends to return to the Kaiserkeller - his girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr, and fellow artist Jürgen Vollmer. The three young Germans began attending nightly, met the Beatles, and formed relationships that blossomed into what would be lifelong friendships among them. Kirchherr explained the first night that she attended: "It was like a merry-go-round in my head. They looked absolutely astonishing. My whole life changed in a couple of minutes. All I wanted was to be with them and to know them." She ended up in a romantic relationship with Sutcliffe and took some of the most iconic of Beatles photographs. When Voormann moved to London, he shared a flat with the Beatles, designed their Revolver album cover (and later the Beatles Anthology covers), and played on solo albums by Ringo, George, and John. In 1961 John and Paul visited Vollmer in Paris, where he had moved, and while there asked him to cut their hair into a style like his - which was the beginning of the famous Beatle moptop look for the two. All of this stemming from the chance occurrence of Klaus' walking by a Hamburg club one night, and being drawn in by what he heard.
