Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Cora Indian/Tarascan, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A beautiful polychromed terracotta olla in the lobed form of a squash or gourd, adorned with striations of orange, red, and grey hues created by the Cora Indians, a Tarascan culture. West Mexican ceramic artisans created a vast array of vessel forms, including effigy representations of human figures, sea and land animals, as well as flora, fruits and vegetables like this example. Size: 5" x 2-3/4".
Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Belaire, CA.
