Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Venezuela, Trujillo, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. Human figurines similar in style, but smaller than the one held by the Denver Art Museum. The larger figurine is a hollow earthenware rattle. It most likely depicts a female with hands on her hips; the figurine has red paint on its front and back, large thighs and eyes, and a distinctive squared-off hair style. The smaller figurine is solid and made of decorated earthenware, also with hands on its hips. The sex of the figure is unclear, but there are carved decorations on it suggesting a belt of some kind. The carving marks made for the belt, particularly on the back, can be seen very clearly. Size: First measures 2-3/4" x 2" x 1"; the second is 2" x 2-1/2" x 1".

Condition
The larger of the figurines has some wear but its red pattern is still very clear both on front and back. There is minor chipping to the edges but in general the piece is in very good condition, with no visible repair marks. The carved details on the face, arms, and feet in particular are very well preserved. The smaller figurine is more worn and a crack across the face has been repaired. There is very little paint left on it.
