Description
A large Etruscan Bucchero amphora with animal frieze, c. 610 – 590 BC, with beautifully burnished glossy black surfaces. Around the side of the body is a beautifully incised animal frieze containing two grazing deer, each with tall antlers, alternating with a lion and lioness, ridges and broad bands of vertical incised lines above and below, and incised ray motif around the base just above the flared foot. The two curved flat handles each decorated with two winged griffons in relief. H: 10 ¾ in (27.3 cm). An impressive example of this desirable Etruscan type! Cf. Perkins, Etruscan Bucchero in the British Museum, (London, 2007), p. 14, no. 12 & pl. 91, nos. 12a-f for very similar examples; Ex Ulfert Wilke, Director of University of Iowa Museum of Art, acquired in New York in 1964; Howard Sirak collection, Columbus, OH.
