Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 600 CE. Quite an unusual piece. Hand built from terracotta and painted with red slip, this figural, cylindrical vessel was created as part of an incensario, note the rather large hole on the gentleman's collar. I will fully admit that this rendering has us a bit stumped with regards to its iconography. Given that the figure is elaborately adorned with a fanciful plaited coiffure, large ear ornaments, a grand pectoral and collar, this figure likely represented a personage of elite status, likely a shaman or leader. The looped right hand tells us that at one point in time, he held a ritualistic instrument in his hands. A bewildering yet mesmerizing artifact! Size: 10"H (25.5 cm) x 6-3/4"W (17 cm) at widest.

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
