Description
Europe, Italy, ca. 1858. A breathtaking, mid-nineteenth century oil on metal painting of a praying angel dressed in robes of red and blue drapery, her wings a flutter as she hovers upon a cloud. She bows her profiled head, adorned with curly, brown locks and encircled by a golden halo in contemplation, with eyes lowered toward her clasped hands. The artist of this piece possessed an expert technique; note the fine modeling of the angel's face and hands and the masterful foreshortening of her wings. While this painting has been attributed to an Italian painter, its luminous palette of saturated colors as well as the naturalism and verism of the figure's human features is very reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites of Britain who emulated the art of the early Renaissance. Size: 40-1/2"H x 25"W.
